    Definition

NIST SP 800-53 is a catalog of security and privacy controls for information systems and organizations.

The publication contains a catalog of security and privacy controls against attacks, human errors, natural disasters, structural failures, and privacy risks. The controls are flexible and adaptable and are implemented within an organization-wide risk management framework.

    Simply explained

Like a large toolbox with fuses: Select what fits your own risk.

    Why it matters in practice

Provides an extensive catalog of controls that are selected and implemented to meet security and privacy requirements for information systems. Non-governmental organizations may voluntarily use the publication according to its notice.

    Example from business

Possible example (hypothetical): A software company uses selected controls from SP 800-53, for example from the families Access Control and Audit and Accountability, as a template for access and logging requirements in a customer project.

    Limits and pitfalls

    • Adopting the entire catalog unfiltered; selecting controls without a risk-based selection process and without clarifying the underlying requirements; overlooking the baselines and adjustment guidance outsourced to SP 800-53B.

    Origin & history

SP 800-53 dates back to 2005. Revision 5 was released in 2020 and consolidated security and privacy controls including supply chain risks; baselines moved to SP 800-53B. Revision 4 from 2013 was withdrawn in 2021. Release 5.2.0 followed on August 27, 2025.

    Use in mid-sized companies

    • Possible applications: Security requirements in tenders, audit catalogs for service providers, alignment with the NIST CSF, securing IT and AI-supported applications.

    Frequently asked questions

    Must all controls be implemented?

Not universally: The controls are flexible and adaptable and are selected in a risk-based selection process; baselines and adjustment guidance are provided in SP 800-53B.

What is the difference from the NIST CSF?

CSF 2.0 describes overarching cybersecurity outcomes, SP 800-53 contains a catalog of individual controls; according to CSF, a control from SP 800-53 can be one of several references to achieve the outcome of a subcategory.
