Multi-Region Operations
Definition
An application is operated across multiple geographic cloud regions.
Services and data reside in more than one region, for example for fault tolerance or shorter paths. Replication and failover must fit the application.
Simply explained
If one site fails, another prepared site can take over.
Why it matters in practice
Business-critical services can be made more resilient.
Example from business
Hypothetical: A service maintains a tested backup operation in a second region.
Limits and pitfalls
- Data synchronization, costs, and legal frameworks become more complex. A second region alone does not guarantee recovery.
Origin & history
Cross-region operation originates from distributed infrastructure and high availability.
Use in mid-sized companies
- SMEs should align effort with outage consequences and recovery objectives.
Frequently asked questions
Must it be written everywhere simultaneously?
