Massive Text Embedding Benchmark (MTEB)
Definition
MTEB compares text embeddings across different tasks.
The benchmark collection includes retrieval, similarity, and classification. It shows that an embedding model is not equally suitable for every task type.
Simply explained
A search engine and a sorting aid require different strengths in the numeric vector.
Why it matters in practice
Multiple subtasks allow a more appropriate model selection than a single overall score.
Example from business
Hypothetical example: A team examines suitable retrieval results for German document search.
Limits and pitfalls
- Languages, datasets, and benchmark versions differ. Ranking values do not replace your own search test.
Origin & history
MTEB was introduced in 2022 by Muennighoff and co-authors.
Use in mid-sized companies
- SMEs can pre-select suitable candidates for semantic search.
Frequently asked questions
Does the top-ranked model always win?
No, your own data set may have different requirements.
