Learning Record Store
Definition
A Learning Record Store stores learning activities, typically as xAPI statements.
An LRS receives statements in the Actor-Verb-Object pattern, manages them, and provides APIs for retrieval. It is not the same as a full learning management system.
Simply explained
Like an event store for learning activities.
Why it matters in practice
Relevant for distributed learning offerings, learning analytics, and evidence across multiple systems.
Example from business
A company collects quiz, course, and practical activities from multiple learning sources in an LRS.
Limits and pitfalls
- Equating LRS and LMS; storing personal learning history without purpose and access concept.
Origin & history
xAPI was developed by ADL; the specification defines LRS interfaces and statement format.
Use in mid-sized companies
- Possible application in SMEs: Technically merge distributed learning events when a single LMS is not sufficient.
