Learning Rate Finder
Definition
A learning rate finder increases the learning rate during a short training run and observes at which values the loss decreases meaningfully or becomes unstable.
The method provides a starting range for the learning rate but does not replace full validation. Implementations vary.
Simply explained
Like systematically turning up the speed controller once to find a usable range.
Why it matters in practice
Relevant for more efficient tuning of neural networks.
Example from business
Before fine-tuning, a short range test is performed and then the chosen learning rate is validated.
Limits and pitfalls
- Blindly adopting finder results; using a different batch size; running too long; using the test set.
Origin & history
Leslie Smith described the LR Range Test in connection with Cyclical Learning Rates in 2015/2017.
Use in mid-sized companies
- Possible application in SMEs: Narrow down training configuration faster and then validate properly.
Frequently asked questions
Is the found value automatically optimal?
No. Must the test run with a similar training configuration? Yes.
