IFEval
Definition
IFEval is a benchmark for reproducibly testing whether language models follow clearly verifiable instructions.
The benchmark contains prompts with automatically verifiable conditions, such as specific keywords, lengths, or format requirements. This makes instruction following objectively measurable compared to purely subjective evaluation.
Simply explained
Like a rule test: the answer must meet concrete, automatically checkable requirements.
Why it matters in practice
Relevant for model comparison when reliable adherence to clear format and process requirements is important.
Example from business
A company uses IFEval as a public reference and supplements it with its own tests on JSON schemas, language, and allowed response formats.
Limits and pitfalls
- Equate IFEval score with general quality; measure only formal rule compliance; ignore benchmark contamination.
Origin & history
Zhou et al. published IFEval in 2023 as a benchmark with about 500 prompts and 25 types of verifiable instructions.
Use in mid-sized companies
- Possible application: part of a model evaluation suite for structured automation and assistance tasks.
Frequently asked questions
What does IFEval measure?
