Clickless Attribution
Definition
Attribution without click examines advertising or information contacts that are not followed by a directly measurable click.
The term describes the attribution of possible effects from contacts without immediate clicks, for example after a visible ad or information in a search result. Such attributions are based on defined measurement assumptions and are not automatically proven causes.
Simply explained
Someone can see a shop window and later shop in the store. Without further information, the store cannot be sure what triggered the visit.
Why it matters in practice
When evaluating visibility, possible effects beyond direct click paths are also considered.
Example from business
Hypothetical example: A brand investigates whether a campaign coincides with more direct inquiries without attributing all inquiries to the campaign by default.
Limits and pitfalls
- Temporal proximity does not prove causation. Different attribution windows and models yield different results.
Origin & history
The approach ties into measuring the effect of visible advertising contacts and later conversions.
Use in mid-sized companies
- Document measurement model, uncertainty, and complementary tests; do not simply replace click data with assumptions.
Frequently asked questions
Can every AI contact be attributed to a later purchase?
No, reliable data needed for this is often missing.
