The short answer · 23 words
In short
Method that gradually combines frequently occurring pairs of characters or symbols into larger units and is used in NLP to form subword tokens.

How much detail would you like?
Practical
Tokenization affects context length, cost, multilingualism and model processing. BPE is a fundamental process behind many modern NLP models.
Example scenario: A rare compound word is broken down into several known subword tokens instead of being treated as an unknown word.
Especially relevant for companies in order to better understand token costs, context boundaries and differences between models; in their own model training, the tokenizer selection is an architecture topic.
At a glance
- Core
- BPE tokenization adapted for language models begins with small units and frequently occurring pairs are repeatedly merged. This creates a vocabulary of whole words, parts of words and smaller units. Rare or new words can thus be represented from known sections.
- Use
- Tokenization affects context length, cost, multilingualism and model processing. BPE is a fundamental process behind many modern NLP models.
- Example

- Limits
- Equate the NLP adaptation of BPE unnoticed with the original compression method or any modern tokenizer variant; equate tokens with word; expect equal token numbers between different models.

Questions about this term
Is a token always a word?
No.
Is BPE the only tokenizer?
No.
Why do you use subwords?
They combine manageable vocabularies with the ability to represent rare words.

ELI5 – Explained simply
The system works not only with whole words, but with reusable pieces of words. Simplified, this could be “car” or a frequent ending; the actual decomposition depends on the tokenizer.
Why it matters in practice

Origin & history
Byte Pair Encoding was originally developed as a compression method. Sennrich, Haddow and Birch successfully transferred the principle to subword units for neural machine translation in 2016.
